|| afterschool special! ||

afterschool special sunday in the key of oceanside pumpkin patch, carving party, and dance club. we piled into two cars to take a most circuitous route south to an enchanted pumpkin patch full of corn stalks and hay and goats and inchworms. d furthered my suspicions that he is indeed a fairy tale character dressed in stay pressed pants getting hay in his hair and whispering good will messages to the sad despondent ponies. we piled dozens of pumpkins into a wheelbarrow and transported approximately two tons of mud (white shoes have turned to tar black) from half moon bay back to san francisco. our car listened to matt's endless soul compilations and played twenty questions (answers: don knotts, fatty arbuckle, sam peckinpaw, shelly winters, harpo marx). back at sara's house we drank whisky and watched nightmare on elm street and ate pizza and disemboweled pumpkins: rosy-cheeked kids in every corner getting guts on their polyester pants and dresses = completely ridiculously cute. after everyone got tired from the surprisingly exhaustive combination of mini road trip + whisky + fighting over the good carving knives, m and a and joanna and i met up at the attic. oh attic, with your fancy haircuts and cocaine-fueled dancing. your really mean girls and eyeliner and fake eyelashes and fur coats. i felt decidedly unqualified for the coolness and did the wallflower shuffle from bar to dance floor to outside to bar to safe haven of booth in the corner, where much spying and disconnected conversations commenced. i was secretly overjoyed when my two ladies were ready to go, one in tears over boy drama, and i drove everybody home like the most trusty of carpool moms.
