|| "tapdancing in the moonlight" was our hit number. ||

today i got a pink envelope in the mail and didn't recognize the return address. i scanned through my wee list of penpals and nothing turned up, and when i opened it it took a few seconds to place the little kid handwriting with the person. it was joe's niece. i tap danced with her in the courtyard of the church after the funeral reception. post-funeral tap dancing = friends for life, and i take it deadly seriously. after the burial i remember hugging her and telling her the next time she visits she should let me know so i can get out my shoes.
she might be visiting this summer and was giving fair warning. at the end of the note she wrote 'write back soon!!!' in twelve-year-old handwriting, and it's one of the dearest things i have ever seen. i wanted to tell somebody about it so badly and tried to think of who would appreciate it the most, and there was one person, but i think he had a hand in orchestrating it all. i like to think he stuck us together as potentially stellar penpals.
