|| bird to baby ||

my mother tried on my engagement ring and said it didn't fit. i was staying over for the weekend and imagine her in the bathroom, spotting it next to the soap, picking it up and cramming it onto her finger. her fingers are so puffy she can't wear her own wedding ring anymore.

i used to wear her jewelry, but the rings were always too small. she was dainty and angular, like a bird, but for the first time in her life she isn't any longer. when i hugged her goodbye, sliding my chin to rest at the back of her shoulder, ear to ear, i noticed how soft she was. not only did her skin feel like a baby's, it was like all the angles were gone or filled in.
