i am an administrative assistant. i have a desk fan and a foot rest and there are always at least two empty coffe cups in my trash can. i have thirteen pens in a holder. my new favorite is a blue universal liquid roller ball 0.5 mm, but only because my black one went missing. i put up polaroids, have nineteen cds i am now sick of, and a secret file in the cabinet of the flyers and comics i have made after everytone has left the office and i am alone to sing along with the beeping of the copy machine. i work with 55-year old ladies who comment on my hair shoes pants length (where's the flood, jenn? aren't your ankles cold? why aren't you wearing stockings?) shoes. who talk in hushed tones at the printer about qvc menopause what's for dinner oakland raiders intestinal problems their awful children the baked potato place down the street.

secretly. or not so secretly. i would like to move on.

i would like to be a waitress. i would like to wear white nursing shoes and an old waitress uniform that puckers at the buttons a little because it doesn't fit quite right in the boob area and when i get very self conscious about that i can put on my lucky sweater. i would like to have several pens tucked in my pockets (the universal liquid roller ball 0.5 mm could come with me.), some of which have left rorschach stains. i would like to serve old men weak coffee and wheat toast for hours on end, and i will not mind if they call me hon or sweetie or their grandaughters' names. i would like this to be in a restaurant far away from newcitystuff: i want tarnished napkin holders and rags that smell faintly faintly of mildew and a register that breaks down occasionally and booths with cracks in the vinyl covered with duct tape. i would like it to have a porch out back that i can sit on to smoke and read the paper while on breaks. i would like to refill ketchup bottles and sugar jars and toothpick dispensers. i would like to sing along to pat boone and bobby darin and air supply and neil diamond while i am picking up orders.
