it has come to this. the melodramatic is somehow justified. the hugging a little too hard and a little too long because it has become much easier to imagine you as a soldier. 'be careful' and 'be careful' and 'be careful' but no 'i love you.' i didn't like that part. the bubble above my head with no words to fill it. or there were words, but the thought of seeing them fall in that flat unceremonious way (the word 'thud' would be drawn in that panel, spelled out in capital letters next to my feet) made me keep them in my mouth to click against my teeth, hard and small like marbles.
