i can remember certain things. the way my mother wore her purse over her shoulder, clutching the strap with an arm bent at the elbow. light glinting off her glasses. the plaid meshing of the stroller: white yellow red blue. the buick: hot vinyl and chrome, thick glass. my sister with white hair like wheat, like whispers. the importance of birds, of sounds, of trains and airplanes.
