|| fourth of july, 2002 ||

july 4: slow starts and slinking about the living room. nursing morning-after headaches and hiding from the sun under grammy's afghans. wishing wishing wishing kellysister were there. the case of the exploding coffee maker. fancy pink birthday dress. michael getting caught again and again in tall tales. saul's delicatessen for lunch, party of six. ramshackle barbeque. beer and watermelon and hot dogs and flaming ears of corn. the matter of the terrorist assault on our dinner disguised as moldy hot dog buns. backyard shooting gallery and fighting over bb gun safety. otis redding. standing room only for kansas' 'carry on my wayward son' blasting from a tiny stereo in the living room. the sound of firecrackers in the street out front. the staircase in the back studded with friends and spiders and watermelon seeds. lemon cake with my name on it. driving to the city amidst red and blue explosions, crossing the bridge with m while rewinding the same song over and over to get the words right. night falling and fireworks all around and the loveliest party complete with beautiful wondrous old friends and lounging about the living room and the califone record player all lit up and loud, playing telephone, square dancing, snapping polaroids. hooray hooray hooray.
