|| box-shaped heart ||

in this shoebox i keep all the chunks of heart that have been returned to me, all the chunks of heart i have stolen when heads were turned or the bus was stopping or the waiter was coming back to retrieve the check. some of them are wrapped in paper and some have come in their own heart-shaped boxes and some have bled through the cardboard, leaving marks one could interpret as divine signs and holy messages, if one were so inclined. at this point i am unsure which were mine to begin with, which were offered up like flowers and buttons, which started the process of decomposition the moment they hit the shoebox.
