|| in the nieghborhood ||

in this neighborhood people throw brown bottles from open car windows to land on speed bumps and painted white lines. the music of squawking and dissenting rented instruments mix with dogs barking and football commentary. bicycles pass with the swiftness of owl wings in flight. grannies in housecoats water potted plants. fences are locked and the corner store door is bolted.

in this house we let the cats sit at the dinner table with us. we take barometric measurements to determine our first lighting of the fireplace. i call my mum to brag about what brian is cooking (poached quinces with fromage blanc. i know!). we fold ourselves into the motley assortment of living room chairs to read feminist magazines and watch tetris high scores. we take pictures for no good reason. we walk around in wigs and scarves and threaten to march out of doors and proclaim our undying neighborhood allegiances.
